PerformancesIn addition to our weekly rehearsals, Alberta Gold Show Chorus loves to perform. We strive to be in the spotlight at many different types of sing-outs.
Performances: Periodically throughout the year, Alberta Gold provides entertainment for various groups and functions. We do two types of performances:
![]() Shows: We put on a show approximately every three or four years. This is our biggest performance and a large fundraiser. It is our opportunity to spotlight our Chorus and our quartets, but we often share our stage with guest performers. Everyone in the Chorus participates in writing, planning, staging and producing the show.
Regional Competition: Each of Sweet Adeline's Regions holds an annual competition where Choruses and Quartets compete to determine who will represent their Region at International Competition. Our Region holds its competition between April and mid May. The competition site rotates across the three provinces but is usually hosted in the Vancouver area every other year (due to the largest percentage of Sweet Adeline's in the Region living in the lower mainland area). In general, competition sites include Vancouver or the greater Vancouver area, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon and Regina. Competition weekend starts on Thursday evening with a get together called 'First Night'. There is entertainment, and Regional Awards are presented. There is a Mass Sing and Educational class on Friday afternoon. The Quartet competition is held on Friday evening. The Chorus competition is held Saturday afternoon. The weekend is capped with a 'Show of Champions', where the winners and runners-up from the competition put on a show on Saturday night, followed by an afterglow (a party with lots of singing and mini performances by quartets). Judges for all regional competitions are provided by the International Organization.
The winning Quartet earns the right to represent our region at the International Competition in the fall of the year they win. The winning Chorus earns the right to represent our region at International Competition in the fall of the next year. This gives Choruses time to generate enough funds to take them to the Competition site, usually a city in the United States. As at most Sweet Adeline events, there is a boutique and other shopping opportunities, and chances to learn and to mingle with friends from other choruses. International Competition: Quartets and Choruses that qualify from their respective regions travel to compete at the International Level. This event is generally held in early to late fall in a large city in the United States, although Calgary had the honour of hosting the 2007 International Convention and Competition. It is a 5 day event that attracts approximately 7000 Sweet Adelines.
