Here is a bit of information about the four voice parts that make up our style of vocal harmony:

Singing Your Part Smart!

Once you have been told what part you will sing, what exactly does that mean in real life? Some specifics for each part are listed below:

Tenor: From the Top of the Mountain...

Tenor

The tenor part occupies the top of the barbershop chord with the infrequent exception of singing below the lead for a few chords. This puts the tenor singer in a similar situation with the basses, forming the "frame" around the two parts (lead and baritone) weaving between them. A good tenor: is aware of her responsibility in the overtone series to create a sound that perpetuates and enhances the overtone "stack"; knows when and with whom she sings an octave; resonates high as well as low notes; sings with melodic confidence; knows where the lead line is in the "cone"; sings down into sound still maintaining lift and ring.

Lead: It's not a Part... It's an Attitude...

Lead

The lead part is so much more than the melody. Leads must approach the part with abandon as well as artistry. They need to be confident and consistent while maintaining a sound that supports the ring of the group's sound. A good Lead: resonates high notes as well and completely as low notes; is skilled in use of appropriate vocal colour using it artistically to enhance the beauty of lyric and melodic line, maintaining proper place in BBS sound and cone; adds width and strength to sound as she approaches and descends below middle C; knows how to interact with other parts to enhance the continuity of melody line (sometimes give it up!); understands relationship with bari's, sharing the entire middle of every chord, both bari and lead sing equally solid and complete vocal lines; has equally strong head and chest tone and can mix them;

Baritone: The Chameleon Harmony Part of Barbershop...

Baritone

The baritone has a unique place in the BBS sound. The bari and lead in combination are the entire middle of each chord. A good baritone: resonates high notes as well and completely as low notes; tries to "lose" herself in the sound of her quartet/chorus (esp. lead section), sings with melodic confidence; knows where the lead line is in the "cone".

Bass: The Power of Barbershop...

Bass

The bass part occupies the bottom of every BBS chord. The lock and ring we strive for is impossible without the skillful execution of a bass line rich in overtones. A good bass: resonates high notes as well and completely as low notes; learns to love head tone, as strength in and skillful use of this part of her voice greatly enhances her ability to produce overtones; maintains flexibility and overall artistry in lower third of range by using a gentle lift of soft palate; sings her part with melodic authority; Skillfully positions her part in every chord to accommodate the other 3 parts in overtone series; learns to sing "weightless" descending intervals; knows that really powerful bass is combination of energy at all volume levels, resonance, and ability to produce overtones.
