Chorus Director & Choreographer:
Kari Evens
Kari Evens

Kari has been the director of Alberta Gold since 1994. She is a founding member of the chorus, starting with only eight singers in the music room of an elementary school. She has been physical warm-up captain, vocal warm-up leader, baritone and bass section leader, assistant director, vice-president, and has been the choreographer since the formation of the chorus. She has also served on the costume, fall regional, show, Olympic, and contest committees. She has also served as assistant stage director at the "Show of Champions" and assistant site inspector at contest venues.

A certified director, Kari has been a member of the Regional Music Faculty and coached other choruses and quartets throughout Region 26. As well as her musical experience, Kari has also served the Regional Management Team on both the selection committee and the nomination committee.

As a former elementary school teacher, Kari knows the value of education and attends the International Education Symposium, International Competition, Fall Regional Workshop, Director's Workshop and Regional Faculty Training each year to learn more about the craft of acapella singing, barbershop style, and transfer that vast training back to her chorus and others in the region. A busy mother of four, Kari has dedicated her life to Sweet Adelines and can't think of anything else that she would rather do.

Assistant Director:
Holly-Jean Kadonaga
Holly-Jean Kadonaga

Holly-Jean's love of singing brought her to Sweet Adelines and Alberta Gold in the fall of 1995. She quickly got into the stream of things and has been a section leader for the Baritones and just recently been named a co-section leader for the Basses, is on the vocal warm up team and is serving on the costume committee. She jumped into the Director's Certification program: has attained the level of Certified Director, and has been an assistant director of the Chorus for a few years. Holly-Jean is currently the Communications and Technology Co-ordinator of the Region 26 Management Team. She enjoys taking advantage of the education opportunities provided by Sweet Adelines including I.E.S., International Competition and Regional workshops. Holly-Jean is, also, the Baritone in her quartet, Ambrosia, as well as being involved in a multitude of other activities. She's one of Alberta Gold's "superwomen".

Administration:

Sweet Adelines is an organization that is generally run by volunteers. There are three main levels of management: Chorus, Regional and International. Administration may be through team management or a board structure.

Chorus Administration:

Alberta Gold is governed by an eight (8) member Board of Directors, 4 of whom are elected each year for a two year term. The Board oversees numerous committees. Committees are charged with overlooking vocal and physical warm-ups, social events, fund raising, musical activities, shows, and occasionally regional events.

Chorus Committees:

There is always a committee or activity waiting for help. We encourage you to find an area of interest and jump in with both feet!

Fundraising:

Through fundraising, we are able to keep our dues to a minimum and the Chorus is able to subsidize the cost of costumes and participating in Regional Events. It is each Chorus member's duty to participate in fund raising activities or as an option one can pay a lump sum to the Ways and Means Committee.

Casino:

We are fortunate to be able to participate in a two day Casino approximately every 18 months. This activity provides us with our major operating capital. You are expected to make yourself, or an alternate person from outside the chorus, available to work the Casino. All persons working the Casino must be pre-registered and cleared through the Alberta Gaming Commission. Casino funds pay for the rental of our practice facility, the set up of our risers, our director's honorarium, educational activities of the Chorus, costumes and a limited amount of Chorus travel. All of these items have to be approved as expenditures by the Gaming Commission.

Other Fundraising:

We have a Ways and Means Committee. Its job is to raise approximately $3,000.00 a year in additional operating money. This money is used to purchase and fund things that are not authorized by the Gaming Commission. We sell Entertainment Books, Avon and SUTP Books; we've had meat and cheese sales; we do performances, hold raffles, have a Chinese Auction (lots of fun) and other money raising ventures as set out by the committee. Each member is expected to do their part in these activities.

Regional Administration:

Region 26 is governed by a Management Team. Members of this team are elected annually by the members of its choruses. They are responsible for the general management of regional activities and competitions. They provide support and educational resources for regional Choruses. We currently have an Alberta Gold member, Holly-Jean Kadonaga, serving on the RMT. Top directors from each region make themselves available to coach other choruses in the International organization, part of the educational emphasis of this Region and the entire organization.

International Administration:

International has a Management Team that governs the whole organization. It is to this body that we pay our International Dues. Head office for Sweet Adelines International is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This organization oversees the development of our directors, our arrangers, and our International judges. It organizes International Competitions, International Educational Events, and oversees regional competitions by providing judges for these events. It is the source for most of our music and educational material.
