About UsAlberta Gold Show Chorus is a group of women who love to sing harmony music. We sing a cappella, which means without accompaniment such as a piano or other musical instruments. We also have choreography to many of our songs. Currently we have about 30 members, but we are always looking for more singers of all ages! We sing for fun and hire.
Alberta Gold Show Chorus sings a wide variety of music: Show tunes, Love ballads, Country and Western, Jazz, Spirituals, Big Band, Blues and Soft Rock... from fast songs to slow songs. These songs are arranged in 4 part harmony, predominately in the Barbershop Style. Barbershop gains its unique sound from its arrangement based on a general combination of 11 chords. Adeline style has a sound in which the parts stack in a conical shape with the Bass voice providing the base of the cone, the Tenor voice, the top, and the Lead and Baritone in between. In other choral music, the parts are stacked in a cylinder with all of the voices having approximately equal weight. There are international and regional songs that are sung whenever and wherever a group of Sweet Adelines get together. Learning Music: It is not necessary to be able to read music to sing with Alberta Gold Show Chorus. Each new song is practiced in voice sections during regular rehearsal hours. Extra practices are often set up for each voice section to provide additional learning opportunities. These are generally outside of regular rehearsal time. Your learning of songs is monitored by your capturing a song onto a tape or digital voice recorder while singing on the risers. These recordings are first, self-evaluated, then handed in to your Section Leader, a tape listener, or in some instances to the director, for evaluation. Tape listeners will provide written commentary of your recording so that you can make corrections. This monitoring is an ongoing part of singing and improving your music and vocal ability. Qualifying: Members are expected to qualify songs that will be sung in performances and competition. To qualify, singers are required to record their part or sing one-on-one to their section leader or director. When you have all the notes and words to a song correct, and your breathing is in the right places, you are qualified to participate in performances of that song and participate in Regional Competition. Choreography: ![]() Our style of singing is a unique blend of vocal and visual performance. The visual presentation is used to enhance the vocal performance, creating a complete package. Choreography is generally added to up-tunes. Often the front row, because they are not confined to the riser, do more complex steps and motions that may take them out in front of the rest of the Chorus. The Director is included in the choreographic moves. Costumes:
Costumes are provided by and are the property of Alberta Gold. They must be maintained by the Chorus member and returned to the Chorus when she leaves. All costumes are paid for by the Chorus. Some have a one time, non-refundable rental charge. Costumes are only to be worn for Chorus activities and at the direction of the Costume Committee. Competition Costume is a special performance costume that is provided by the Chorus. Other costumes, which may include items from your personal wardrobe, are established by the Costume committee and are used for casual performances. Make-up: When Sweet Adelines perform in competition and shows, they wear stage make-up. This includes a pancake make-up base, blush, eye-shadow & liner, false eye lashes, lipstick & liner, and nail polish. Each chorus member must buy her own make-up. A specific list of brands and colours is available from the costume committee. When we sing in regular performances, we wear our personal make-up applied slightly heavier than we would wear it day to day. Sweet Adelines International: Alberta Gold Show Chorus is a member of an international organization of women who love to sing. Here is some information on Sweet Adelines International.
